CONNECTING YOUTH TO RECOVERY
PROGRAMS & TOOLKITS
A NOTE FROM THE ORGANIZATION
The reality of drug use among young people continues to be a sensitive issue for many public health and drugs service providers. Predominant approaches that solely focus on drug prevention and ‘just say no’ approaches has left this vulnerable population largely silenced, neglected, stigmatized, and without their needs met. Honest conversations about how to reduce harms related to drug use amongst youth are avoided, and while harm reduction approaches to drug use continue to be implemented and expanded, young people have not benefited from these evidence based services. A number of significant barriers have affected the ability of young people to access life saving harm reduction interventions, including the lack of targeted youth specific services.
Evidence continues to show that young people are highly vulnerable to experiencing drug related harms including HIV and hepatitis. We also now know that harm reduction approaches are among the most effective measures to protect the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs. Young people also have a right to access these services, however they also require a specific, targeted approach that is accessible, that matches their needs, and that is age appropriate.
The “For Lake’s Sake” program has remained committed to principles of non-judgment, respect, and human rights throughout the development of these much needed toolkits. Most importantly, they have ensured that young people most affected by drug use remain at the center of the development process, which is absolutely critical in order for interventions to be relevant, appropriate, accepted, and beneficial. The “For Lake’s Sake” team have also illustrated how youth leadership can be fostered, and have ensured that the capacity of young people who have been affected by drug use or familiar or been around drug use, and
has had a lived experience is promoted throughout.
As the only youth-led network in Fort Wayne, IN that advocates for a harm reduction approach for young people, Teens4ODAW has been honored to be a part of the development of these excellent toolkits. We hope this work will provide a model for the broader implementation of harm reduction approaches for young people and will help us move towards evidence based and humane societal responses for young people who use drugs that effectively reduce drug related harm.
If student needs any resources for one on one peer recovery coaching, counseling, wellness plans and other mental health related services, inpatient and outpatient resources and any harm reduction services, “For Lake’s Sake” can provide these services to that individual. 260-387-5663

PEER RECOVERY COACHING
Connect with a certified peer recovery coach to create a recovery plan. A peer recovery coach brings valuable lived experience with addiction and recovery, and has completed specialized training to effectively provide non-clinical recovery support to individuals in or seeking recovery. Recovery coaches work with clients after they leave rehab in order to reinforce and encourage a healthy lifestyle. They also work with families, helping everyone cope with changes that accompany addiction.
